It’s something you hear when you connect a thumb drive. It’s something you puzzle about when the noise happens randomly. It’s the boo-doop, which is what I call the default sound that plays in Windows when a new devices is added.

Folder Insanity Explained

I’m a big fan of information organization. When it comes to a computer, you use folders to organize your files. Folders can contain other folders, and you can toss in some shortcuts or aliases to help deal with files that could dwell in multiple locations. All that makes sense, but it’s not really how Windows presents files and folders.

Basic File Operations

Of all the tools and toys in the File Explorer window, the most commonly used are the file manipulation commands. These four basic file operations are Copy, Move, Rename, and Delete. As you might suspect, several methods are available for implementing these commands.

The Folder View

The name of the program that displays files and folders in Windows 10 is called File Explorer. It was once called Windows Explorer. That keeps with Microsoft’s tradition of using the same or similar names over and over; they just can’t use the word “Explorer” enough, I suppose.

Windows 10 File Folder Tools

Over the last few incarnations of Windows, the file folder has changed dramatically. Gone is the old toolbar, replaced by the Ribbon. It’s a concept borrowed from the 2007 revision of Microsoft Office, and the Ribbon interface works really well as long as it doesn’t freak you out.

Mutliple Windows Desktops with Task View

Quite a few operating systems and GUIs offer the ability to use multiple desktops. You can switch and shuffle between them, just as if each desktop was its own window, but it’s not! This trick is now available to Windows with the recent Windows 10 update. The feature is called Task View.
