Wee Li’l Icons All in a Row

It started out as the Status Bar. Some Windows veterans may still refer to it that way, but somewhere along the line the name changed: Notification Area. It’s that spot on the far right of the Windows taskbar that overflows with teensy icons — or not, depending on how it’s configured.

Although it’s a word processor, Word has Excel-like formulas you can slap down into a table. These formulas assist you with mathematical puzzles that would otherwise be daunting.

Word Table Math

As long as I’m on a table binge with my Wamblog Word posts, here’s another trick you can pull inside a table: Math.

Yeah, it sounds scary, but keep in mind that it’s the computer that does the math. You just need to know how to set up a formula inside a table.

The Power of Word’s Sort Command

sort button The icon looks innocent enough. It’s featured prominently in the Table Tools/Layout tab. But it also has a tiny twin in the Home tab’s Paragraph group. It’s the Sort icon.

Wi-Fi All Over the House

Most people set up a home network that includes a Wi-Fi base station. Smart move: Given today’s portable gizmos, it makes sense for them all to gang up on the local network and eschew those mobile data surcharges.

When the Wi-Fi network doesn’t reach everywhere in the house, extend it with a Wi-Fi extender.

A mail list is an email delivery system. You sign up, and then information is sent to your email account. Mail lists can be useful, but they can also be a pain in the rump. Fortunately, things are better today than they were ages ago.

Table Formatting in Word

A table is really an Excel-thing. Word does tables, of course, but Excel does them better. Still, it’s easier to whip out a table in Word than it is to do the convoluted exercise of inserting an Excel “object” into a Word document.
