A new message floats in on my phone. It’s Steve. I need to phone him, but I need to do so when I’m at my computer. Do I mark the message as “unread” so that I can pick it up again on the PC? And if I delete the message on my phone, is it also deleted on the computer?

December 28, 2017PorchCam 2017 Year In ReviewThis year saw the demise of PorchCam 2.3 and the birth of PorchCam 2.4. It also saw a software upgrade, so that the images are taken at given intervals instead of randomly as people visit the page. The result is an interesting collection of images that review the past year — quite a few of them, in fact.

December 25, 2017My 2017 Predictions in ReviewO! Why do I bother? I don’t think I’ve actually predicted anything, other than the correct name of the iPad when it came out. I wasn’t alone on that prediction. Still, the process gives me something to do so. Here’s this past year’s predictions in review: December 21, 2017The Perils of Real-Time CollaborationOnline collaboration is a new feature in Microsoft Word, so new that it really doesn’t work yet. December 18, 2017The Relentless Software Update CurveI just suffered through another Mac OS X upgrade and the question lingers, “Why?” The OS has been pretty darn stable. December 14, 2017Lots of PiOriginally it was on a lark. I wanted to buy the $20 “computer on a card.” Physically, the thing is the same size as a playing card. It’s a fully functional computer: SD card storage, USB interfaces, networking, sound. It’s a Raspberry Pi. December 11, 2017The Evolution of the UserThe gizmos we have today would be marvels 50 years ago. I can’t imagine explaining to my 1960s Grandmother all the miraculous things a smartphone could do. She just wouldn’t believe so much could be packed into the device the size of a cigarette case. (That’s a 1960s reference.) No, the big difference isn’t in technology, it’s in the users.

December 7, 2017No More Room for Your AppsThe decision is difficult. When you buy a phone, do you pay for the $599 model with 32GB of RAM or pony up the extra $100 for the 64GB model? And who cares! After all, how can you ever fill all that memory?
