Easy Access to Weird Characters in Word

Typing on a computer involves more than just the text you’ll find on the keyboard. Occasionally you need some special symbols. Word’s Symbol command can help, but you probably don’t know the secret to finding even more symbols than what’s displayed in the Symbol dialog box.

Save Me!

My advice: Save your documents! Save them right away, as soon as your create something, such as a smidgen of text in a word processor. Then save frequently and often. That’s good advice, but it begs the question of where to save.

Windows Phone? Nope!

I’m often asked which phone to buy. Brands and model numbers mean little to me. What’s important is the operating system, in which case you have several choices. Among them, I prefer Android (of course). Apple’s iOS is also good, but I strongly recommend against buying a Windows phone.

A Better USB Connector

Don’t get me wrong: The USB cable is genius. It improves upon a nightmare of cables that once festered behind every computer like a nest of snakes. The problem? While you have a 50 percent chance of plugging the cable in the proper way, you get it wrong about 80 percent of the time.

I had an interesting email the other day: A user wanted to know how to disconnect an Android app from Facebook. She tried uninstalling the app, but that trick didn’t work. What did work was to clear the data.

Merging Labels in Word 2013

Mail merge is one of those things you expect a word processor to do. Word takes the concept a step further, letting you create mail merge letters, email, and mailing labels, among others. Of the lot, merging labels seems to work the weirdest.
