My son needed to write a college paper, one that had special formatting. So he asked me a Microsoft Word question on formatting a numbered list. I told him the answer, but the suggestion didn’t work. Turns out he wasn’t using Microsoft Word at all.

A Dialup Modem Answers the Phone

Back in the 1980s, I paid the extra money to have two phone lines installed in my apartment. Both apartments: I outgrew my single bedroom apartment, where the computer sat in the living room. The second apartment had a second bedroom, which became my office.

The first line was for me. The second line was for the computer. Specifically, it was for the computer’s modem.

Man, this web page is taking a while to load. The spiny thing is going backwards still, which probably means the Internet is down? Is it? Or is the network slow when the spiny thing goes forwards?
