A Used What?

I paid a lot for my first computer. We all did back in the early days. That was a shock.

What was even more shocking was when I tried to sell my computer. After two years, I learned that my beloved, although used, TRS-80 Model III had no value.

King of the Media Cards

It’s been almost a year since I wrote about the various media card formats. Over time, one of the 19 potential formats has come out on top. I knew one would, because that’s how manufacturers and consumers eventually, organically work. The question is, which one?

An Even Faster Speed?

The fees weighed heavy on my wallet. I was paying close to $200 for cable. That included my Internet, for which I was paying a speed premium. The bulk of the bill, however, went to TV — stuff that I didn’t watch.

It’s All About That Box

Sure, you can go to a real life, brick-and-mortar store and find a box of software. The odds are better, however, that the software you obtain for your computer came over the Internet. Even if you get a “box” of software, it’s tiny and probably contains only a download link and code. Times have changed.

Adventures in Self-Publishing

Recently, I published two new Kindle books: Dan Gookin’s Nexus 9 Tablet A to Z and Dan Gookin’s Nexus 7 Tablet A to Z. I used Word to create the documents, but more than just writing, crafting an eBook or anything self-published takes special care. Here’s my advice:

Picture Layout Options in Word

Unless you tell it otherwise, Microsoft Word believes any picture in your document to be one, large, single character. It jiggles and jostles around the text as you edit and add. That may be exactly what you want, or it may drive you nuts. Not to worry: You can fix the picture by changing its layout.

There’s a Picture in the Document!

Despite my lengthy protestations, Microsoft has fully integrated pictures with words in their Word word processor. In fact, dealing with pictures in a document is pretty easy — providing that you know a few tricks.
