History of the Floppy Disk

Filed under: News — admin @ 9:06 am

I remember the floppy well. I never had a computer that required an 8-inch disk, though I used those disks at the publishing house where I worked.

Yeah, verily, I suffered through stacks of 5 1/4-inch floppy diskettes, and piles upon piles of 3.5-inch diskettes. There was once a whole chapter of PCs For Dummies dedicated to the different types and densities of floppies.

Today, I still have one computer in the garage that has a 5 1/4-inch floppy drive. I also have a “loose” drive that I could install in any computer, but haven’t done so in over 10 years. I have a USB 3.5-inch floppy drive I’ve used from time to time. But with Sony stopping manufacture of floppies in 2010, the era is pretty much over.

Rest in peace, floppy disk.

Dell Inc. took a stock market swan dive today, as its earnings fell 18% last quarter. The culprit? Declining sales to the consumer market.

What happens if someone finds your phone? What happens if they also find you next to your phone and you’re unable to communicate?

Google’s Play Music App Sabotages WMA Files

This is petty. Once upon a time you could import music from your PC into your Android device. Not any more!

Woz: The Cloud is Bad

Filed under: News — admin @ 10:47 pm

I agree with Woz: There is value to having stuff on your computer, right there on the mass storage. With stuff on “the cloud,” who owns it? What happens to it? Interesting thoughts.

How Google May Win in the Voice Wars

Filed under: News — admin @ 9:24 am

Ever wonder why Google offered a free 411 telephone directory service about eight years ago? Or why Google knows what you’re searching for even when you can’t type or spell? It’s all part of a nefarious plot!

Avoiding Data Overages

Yes, I’m one of the few. I still have an “unlimited” data usage plan on my Verizon phone. So does my son Jonah. My son Jeremiah, however, is burdened with the 2GB limit. Per month. How does he survive?

Once IE Was the King

Filed under: News — admin @ 10:40 am

Now look at it: The market penetration of Internet Explorer is about 16 percent. It was once about 90 precent. It was the da King! The top browser now is Google Chrome.

I see two good things: First, it’s obvious that Windows users are mature enough to realize that they don’t have to stick with the slop that Microsoft dishes up. Second, they’re fully capable of downloading and installing a browser other than IE. That’s just wonderful!

I Hang Onto This Stuff

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

I swapped printers the other day. Moved one from hither to thither. As I did, I opened the drawer where I keep printer manuals and discs. And in that drawer, I beheld a raft of old SIMMs — memory cards from computers long gone.
