Word’s Multiple Margin Mysteries

Making a page look just write, er, right [Let’s say “correct” – Ed.] in Word can be frustrating. That’s because the Microsoft Word word processor has not one but two sets of margins. Only by knowing how to set both can you get the page to look just correct. I mean, just right.

Word Weirdness, Part II

Another weird Word thing is Word’s obscure and seldom-used keyboard commands for copying or moving blocks of text. I assume that these commands are probably hold-overs from the original, DOS (text-based) version of Word in the 1980s. Who knows?

There are lots of weird things you can do in Word. Now that I’m revising my Word for Dummies book for the Office 2010 version of Word, I’ve once again stumbled upon some of the more oddball aspects of the programs, stuff I’d write about if I had the room in the book, but stuff that’s otherwise not really that important. No, it’s just weird.

The Lure of the Soft Return

Word 7 changed a lot of word processing things. One of the most odd (some would say annoying) is its standard paragraph format which seems to always add a puff of space between the lines of each paragraph you type. When you’re trying to type an address, that extra space can be a real pain.
