Boo!

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

I don’t remember Halloween being such a big holiday when I was a kid. There were pumpkins — jack-o’-lanterns, actually — and maybe a skeleton on a string or cardboard cutout witch. But today? Massive displays on yards. Halloween lights? People go all out.

It’s the scary season, where blood and gore and death are pretty much acceptable. Where bank tellers and school teachers dress like hookers and get away with it. Everything is done in the name of fun, and maybe for a good scare. But what about when your computer participates in the “fun”?

Cellular Nexus 7 and the Nexus 10 are Here

Filed under: News — admin @ 11:34 am

Today Google introduced an updated version of the Nexus 7 tablet. The new version has cellular data access, though it’s sold “unlocked.” That means you have to find a cellular provider to give you access. A 32GB model was also introduced.

The Nexus 10 looks like it’s going to be one hell of a tablet. It’s not cellular, but it has an über-high-resolution display, 300 ppi. That compares with the iPad’s 264 ppi. Golly!

Doing a Manual Backup Automatically, Part IV

Even though I have a backup drive on my PC, and it backups files every so often, I enjoy having a second backup copy, what I call a manual backup or mirror of my important work files.

Even with the automation the DOS prompt and robocopy bring to the file duplication process, it would stil be nice if the computer performed that task for you, automatically and on a schedule. In Windows, that chore falls to the Task Scheduler program.

Assuming that you’ve read Monday’s blog post, you have a thumb drive that can handle a manual copy, or backup, of some important files. This blog post describes the DOS command used to actually copy over those files.

Apple’s Fusion Drive

Filed under: News — admin @ 2:44 pm

Beyond the iPad mini, today Apple announced a new hybrid SSD and HDD called the Fusion drive. Apparently it uses basic Hard Disk drive (HDD) technology bolstered with Solid State drive (SSD) technology. Don’t know how that would work.

Based on my knowledge (and personal experience in) computer history, it sounds like a fad. It’s seems like a half-step between traditional hard drives and the SSDs of tomorrow.

Other famous half-steps:

• Expanded Memory in DOS.

• Stacker and Double Space to expand hard drive storage

• TSRs or memory-resident programs

Oh, the list goes on.

Doing a Manual Backup Automatically, Part I

Backup! It’s so important! I’ve written about it lots. But recently I received an email question, “How can I backup my stuff to a thumb drive?” It’s a decent question.
