Apple’s Fusion Drive

Filed under: News — admin @ 2:44 pm

Beyond the iPad mini, today Apple announced a new hybrid SSD and HDD called the Fusion drive. Apparently it uses basic Hard Disk drive (HDD) technology bolstered with Solid State drive (SSD) technology. Don’t know how that would work.

Based on my knowledge (and personal experience in) computer history, it sounds like a fad. It’s seems like a half-step between traditional hard drives and the SSDs of tomorrow.

Other famous half-steps:

• Expanded Memory in DOS.

• Stacker and Double Space to expand hard drive storage

• TSRs or memory-resident programs

Oh, the list goes on.

  1. Back to the iPad mini, I am SHOCKED that Apple released something that can come in black or white, has a front AND rear camera, AND has the retina display all in the first generation. At least it doesn’t seem like a desperate cash grab of deliberately releasing inferior products only to release improved ones a year later.

  2. I’m sure the other tablet manufacturers are glad Apple kept their [arrogant] price point. The “Apple” tax. But who knows? They may have even more ready for the next go-round; another reason for the early adopters to kick themselves in the head. Perhaps it will be 4G connectivity or something?

  3. $330 is quite ridiculous, for that price you could get a new iPod Touch (4th gen) and a new Kindle Paperwhite for the same price.
