I’m pleased with my new phone, but the purchase has also reminded me of something: The ordeal everyone goes through for a new phone. Because these devices are so integral to our lives, the upgrade isn’t the smooth and easy transition it once was.

I don’t buy new cars often. When I do, I prefer to buy a new car as opposed to a used car. Yes, my father and everyone else told me how dumb that was, but I keep my cars for a long time. So I look at the cost over that period of time, as well as the maintenance costs added to the purchase of a used vehicle.

Yes, I have a smartphone. Yes, I can receive text messages. I may not reply right away, but I get them. So why do various friends and associates see fit to send a text message to my email account?

I traveled back in time the other day. It was 1982, and I met up with my younger self leaving work. I had only a few temporal moments to interact, but younger-me dominated the conversation. He asked the immediate and obvious question, “Are there flying cars in the future?”

The topic is human interface design. It’s a skill required to introduce some gizmo, tool, or what-have-you to a random human being and have that human instantly know how the sucker works.

The onscreen keyboard has never impressed me, neither Apple’s nor Android’s version. I understand its necessity, but nothing beats a physical keyboard for typing on a mobile device.
