The Volume Label

My Thoughts on Online Backup

I’m a big fan of backing up computer files. I’ve got backup programs running automatically on all my computers, with robust external hard drives storing safety copies of my stuff. I use all the backup tricks in the world, save one: online backup. My reason is that I don’t trust it.

Muting a Mic

I got an interesting e-mail from Michael. He was getting feedback from his laptop every time he put his hands over the keyboard. The laptop’s microphone was echoing through the speakers and creating a rather annoying situation. That led me to discover the 7 steps it takes in Windows Vista to mute a microphone.

I Bought a Square Monitor

I recently found PC monitor shopping to be a pain in the rump. No, it’s not because of the prices; LCD monitors are cheap! (In fact, has anyone seen a CRT monitor in a store recently?) The quality of the monitors is okay. But what’s irking me are the monitors’ aspect ratio.

Hard Drive Crash! Oh Noes!

It was due. During a routine restart after a software upgrade, I lost a hard drive. Fortunately it was an external, backup hard drive. The most disappointing part, sadly, is that this is possibly the fourth external hard drive I’ve had crash in as many years. Why do external hard drive suck so badly?
