Facebook Goin’ Down

Filed under: News — admin @ 9:49 am

I wrote about this a few blog posts ago: Facebook is becoming the new AOL. Here’s an article from Douglas Rushkoff over at CNN who agrees with me. Okay, well, he’s basically saying the same thing. I’m not arguing that this is my original idea or anything. Still it’s nice to see someone else who recognizes the same Facebook-AOL connection.

  1. It will be interesting to see how Diaspora takes off, the idea of it being open source might prove popular. It’s always good to have competition anyway it will keep Facebook on their toes. I have a feeling I heard that Mark Zukerberg invested some of his own money into this project, so maybe they will co exist, with the ability to cross over, or use both as the same time. It will be nice to have a choice, I’ve never used Bebo but I can’t think of any others.

  2. I hope you’re right. It will be interesting to see how it shakes out, especially because the AOL parallel breaks down at that point. AOL was basically succeeded by the Internet as a whole, direct access. I don’t see a similar paradigm for Facebook.

  3. It’s funny I haven’t heard of AOL in the UK for some time now they used to be massive in the late 1990’s onwards I’m sure they had their own search engine, along with Yahoo and Lycos but I haven’t seen much from them recently.
