My trip down memory lane last week, with my foray into the DOSBox program to retrieve an old WordPerfect document, made me think about my typical DOS computer set up. It especially reminded me of all the utilities I used to make life bearable in that stark, command line environment.

Hold This, Please

ottie I like Android smartphones, but I also like the toys that come with them. I frequently buy the docking station and the car mount whenever I get a new phone. The thing I don’t like, however, is paying the super premium prices the Phone Store charges for those toys. The solution is to go rogue and buy something that works, but doesn’t cost you a day’s wages.

Life After the Internet

It was truly a culture shock when the Government pulled the plug on the Internet. Citing “national security” concerns, the Feds halted all online activity several years ago. Without email, Facebook, the web, file transfer, online gaming, Netflix, Amazon, eBay, Google and more, the world changed in a heartbeat.

From Folder to Directory and Back

In the command prompt world of DOS, folders were called directories. Once the transition to the glorious graphical goodness of Windows was made, directories became folders. They’re still the same thing.

Yes, Virginia, There is an AppData Folder

As a computer user, you’re probably adult enough to understand that lots of hidden goodies dwell behind the operating system’s delicious visual interface. Most of those goodies are things you probably don’t want to mess with, but because Windows isn’t the most complete, well-thought-out operating system, the need to go digital spelunking is often necessary.

Google Calendar Update

A very minor update to Google Calendar has been released. It doesn’t change the look of the calendar, but it does fix an annoying issue: Events dismissed on one device are dismissed on all devices accessing the Calendar. So if you get a notice on your phone and dismiss it, you won’t see the same notification on your tablet or PC. Nice.
