Verizon Suffers

It’s difficult for me to feel sorry for Big Red, but like the dark side of the force, I let the hatred flow through me. I know that I overpay for my Verizon account. A lot! It’s ridiculous. So much so, and so financially painful for many others, that lots of subscribers have made “the switch” to another carrier. That exodus is now affecting the company’s bottom line.

The thing is, Verizon has the best coverage of all providers. It’s signal goes everywhere, and it has more LTE locations. But they just put you in a headlock with their egregious terms and contracts. In my mind, I’m okay paying about $40 per month for each phone and $10 for a mobile device. I should get 10GB of data for that. As it stands, I pay more like $70 per month for each phone and get only 4GB of data (shared).

I’m pretty sure Verizon has a better plan for me, but they aren’t exactly beating down my door to get me to sign up. I’d have to go to Verizon and then — my guess — I’d have to extend all my phone contracts. That’s just a guess, but it’s what I would expect from them and it’s not what I want: More fees.

Perhaps the bottom line pinch that Big Red is feeling on Wall Street will convince them to provide better service at a better cost? Try not to laugh; it’s worked before.

  1. I think T-Mobile has the best deal. You get real unlimited data for $40 a month, they just throttle you back on speed when you go over your cap. They will sell you unlocked phones, even Apple sells there unlocked iPhones through T-Mobile. The only problem is coverage, T-Mobile only has good coverage in big cities. Thats why everyone flocks to Verizon and AT&T because they are willing to pay through the nose to have that kind of coverage. I have actually heard good things about the cellular service that Walmart sells, but its not worth my time to try it out since I only have one midrange phone.

  2. The best deal is to go fully independent. AirVoice Wireless offers plans for very low. My son has one on his unlocked Galaxy Note III that costs him only $30/month. That includes everything, and it’s a month-to-month “contract.”
