Laptops on the Space Station

I don’t even think of this, but why is the International Space Station literally littered with laptops? The answer is surprising.

According to the article, you’ll find over 80 laptops on the ISS. And the big reason that they use laptops is that they’re easier to replace than built-in computers. Makes sense.

  1. It’s kinda fun seeing those old multi-coloured IBM logos. I know why they do it, though.

  2. The reason is that the older technology is more adaptable to the harsh environment. I read where the space shuttle was using 286 processors when the Pentium was available. The reason was the the newer processors didn’t have the proper shielding. So the ISS most likely uses older laptops for the same reasons.

  3. Also older tech tends to be more ruggedly built, I remember when Packard Bell PC came in a folder steel case they were bough by the company I worked for at the time by from a high street reseller as they would pass EMI, RF & other tests due to their case (put windows 2K on ’em) some are still in use on Royal Navy ships last I heard!

  4. Check out that one laptop in the upper right. It has the old IBM logo on it — and you can see on the right side an optical drive slot. That has to be a vintage early 2000’s laptop, probably running Windows 2K.

  5. To quote my Boss “Win 2K doesn’t crash”. The apps can fall like rain but the OS stays up.
