The 1,000th Blog Post

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

This post is number 1,000 on the Dan’s Thoughts blog here at Wambooli.

My goodness!

This blog came online in 2007. It was a replacement for two popular Wambooli features: The Wambooli Forums and my Weekly Wambooli Salad newsletter.

The Forums were difficult to manage and also not a good media in which I could share ideas. The weekly newsletter required that I maintain an electronic mail list, which really took a lot of effort. Also, people would sign up for the list, forget, and then complain that I was “spamming” them. That made the process unpleasant.

My original goal with this blog was to replace my Weekly Wambooli Salad newsletter with three weekly blog posts. I’d comment on events, talk about the computer industry, and write on topics presented in my books. I figured that thrice weekly was possible, providing I wasn’t busy doing anything else. That was my target.

Lamentably, like many blogs, I had trouble maintaining that objective.

For a couple of periods (none recent, thankfully), this blog disappeared. I was either too busy on other projects or lost interest. It’s difficult for anyone to maintain a blog; ask anyone who’s tried. In fact, most blogs start up with lots of posts and interests. Then, over time, the frequency of posts drops. People go on vacation or get busy and then stop posting. Then there’s blog guilt over starting up again. Such things have killed many blogs.

Earlier this year I figured out a few things about the blog software. I’m now able to tie the posts directly into the support pages for my books. That keeps me active writing on topics that expand information and keep the books updated.

I’ve also developed a writing pattern that ensures I devote enough time to create new posts. So every Saturday I write all the posts for the coming week. That’s three blog posts on Wambooli plus one weekly post over on my C For Dummies site. And during the week I’ll write posts based on email I receive or things I observe. Generally I have many posts stacked up to ensure that I don’t miss a date. And I can shuffle things around if a current topic pops up.

Anyway!

Today also marks a change in the blog’s title. Originally I called it Dan’s Thoughts, but it’s really just the Wambooli Blog. I’ve shortened that to Wamblog, which is the blog’s name going forward.

So 1,000 posts since January 2007. I’m looking forward to the 2,000 post, which should happen sometime in the year 2020. That is, unless the Robot Apocalypse happens before then.
