The Jobs Report

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

In case you haven’t read it, Steve Jobs this week announced he was resigning his position as CEO of Apple. He’d like to stay on as Chairman of the Board, and filling his position will be the able Tim Cook.

What does this mean?

I hope it means that Jobs is going to pay more attention to his health. The workload probably isn’t helping.

Or it could mean that Jobs’ health isn’t improving. I mean, face it: He looked like a human skeleton at the last product announcement. His clothes were hanging off his frame. It was scary. I strive to be skinny but definitely don’t want to be that thin!

Given poor health, Jobs may want to leave now, promote his successor, and lessen the impact that a sudden death would have were he still the CEO.

Regardless, I think Apple is in good shape. Jobs is smart, so I’m sure he has plans for Apple’s future well-laid out. It’s entirely possible that there’s a road map for Apple’s technology innovations that stretches out for years.

In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised that the first product introduction after Jobs has passed on is introduced by Jobs himself in a prerecorded message. That would be something, and it would drive the fanboys wild. Look for it.

Google Swallows Motorola Update. Apparently I was correct: Google’s acquisition of Motorola wasn’t for the hardware, but rather for its 16,000 patents. The idea is that holding the patents thwarts a host of lawsuits Google was facing over the Android operating system. I hope that ploy works, and I hope Google spins off the Motorola hardware division so that it remains a software company.

I doubt it, Apple is a cult that is built on Jobs as the messiah. If you take a step back and look at all the “innovation” of Apple, its really a lot of hype and aluminum chassis. And without Jobs prancing around on stage convincing everyone this stuff is “magical”, I think the current line of Apple products can only hold out for so long till the Apple board of directors will revert back to reality of a normal business model. I will be interesting to see how long they can hold up the product line with just Jobs memory to back them up.

Dan- Have you ever tried WebOS, it looks like they might port Android to it. Ive heard a lot of people like it but both Palm and HP have dropped the ball on it.

  2. You could be correct. Apple sucked it big time back in the 1990s after Jobs left. Their product line was a muddled mess and the company was looking to be bought out by Sun. Then again, Jobs is visionary. I don’t think that he’s leaving the company with an empty bag.

WebOS is a mobile operating system, similar to Android in that it’s based on Linux. They’ve ported some WebOS devices over to Android, but I think WebOS is going to die for lack of support.
