My For Dummies 20th Anniversary Interview

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

So I did the gig on the Blog Talk Radio thing a few weeks back.

It was fun, and I got to talk about the early days of the For Dummies series. I didn’t get to interact with Dr. Ruth, which is fine.

I swear, that woman has a one-track mind.

What would have been cool would have been to get her to say my name, something like, “Dan Gookin is a really good lover!” and then use that as my ringtone.

Reader Mike has found the link to the interview. It’s a full-hour thing, and I come on only during the last 45 minutes. Dr. Ruth is on at about the 30 minute mark.

Click here to listen. That link goes to an MP3 file, which your browser should play.

There are more 20th Anniversary things scheduled for later next month in New York City. I plan on being there, and know that I’m doing a book-signing. I’ll fill you in on more details as I learn more about this trip.

NEW TOPIC

Google’s stock has been tanking ever since former CEO Eric Schmidt vacated the position. It started dwindling about the time he made that announcement.

Yesterday, Google’s sales figures came in. They were way, way lower than what Wall Street expected.

Normally Google (stock symbol GOOG) beats the estimates. Even so, the stock typically dives after they announce. It will be interesting to see what the stock does today. Whether its long run up and up and up is finally over, or whether the market views the lower price as a buying opportunity.

Google remains a strong company. There is no rival. Even Microsoft can’t put a dent in Google’s juggernaut.

Yahoo? Don’t make me laugh.

‘NUTHER TOPIC

Today is the traditional Tax Day in the US, when your Federal and State (if you got ’em) tax forms are due. Even so, Monday is the deadline for 2011. This article explains why.

Anyone out there use software to do your taxes? I’ve played with the software a little. I knew some folks who worked at Chipsoft, the original developers of TurboTax. But I’m ascared to do taxes by computer. I’ve just heard too many horror stories. But the stuff sells, so it must do something right.

  1. “I’ll only be 83 in June!”

That’s interesting hearing what Wordperfect did with their software support.

  2. WordPerfect’s software support sold the product. At the time it was very unique: Toll-free support. Unlimited time. No charges at all. My book saved the company a lot of time and expense, which is exactly what I wanted, so I appreciated their recommendations.

Looking forward to 83, though it’s going to be fun to be 86.

  3. The market has been open 30 minutes and Google stock (GOOG) is down 38 points or about 6 1/2 percent.

    Weeeeeee! Enjoy the ride.

  4. I saw your interview on that website a couple of weeks ago, and I downloaded the MP3 via RealPlayer. It was good!

By the way, how can I do italics and bolds in comments, do I just kind of thing?

  5. This site allows limited HTML codes in the comments, not the BB codes. The difference is the brackets. Use angle brackets and you’ll get your code. Also see http://www.wambooli.com/freebies/bloggers/
