I think portable computers could have been made a lot earlier than 81, but back then people could hardly see the need for a computer in the home much less a mobile one. There are two computers I think could have been made portable just by adding a battery, the Rockwell AIM 65 and the Epson HX-20

Well, remember that “portable” is an objective definition. The O1 weighed like 20 lbs. I had an early Dell “laptop” that weighed 16 lbs and came with two lovely 20 minute batteries. So, yes, it’s possible!
