The Tablet Thing (Again)

Filed under: Main — Tags: — admin @ 12:01 am

I think I’m beginning to figure out how a Tablet can become part of your life. Or have is that the Apple Kool-Aid?

There is a Galaxy Tab within my arm’s reach. I bought it for my soon-to-be-released tome, Samsung Galaxy Tab For Dummies.

The Tab is a nifty little gizmo. It’s small enough to put in my jacket pocket, not my pants pocket — and believe me, I tried. It lasts about two days on a charge.

Originally, I had the Verizon data service. Never used it. So I dropped it. The Tab is Wi-Fi now, which fits into how I find myself using it.

Seriously: This blog has pondered over the question of “Why the heck are there Tablets?” for a while now. So I thought I’d share how I’ve found the Tab to be a useful accessory to my digital life.

The other day I was cooking in the kitchen, cooking being one of my non-digital hobbies. It was a recipe that required me to watch the stove for a while, so I was marooned in the kitchen and nothing about World War II was on the History Channel. To kill the time, I used the Galaxy Tab.

Yes, I could have used my phone. It can brows the web and play games, but the Galaxy Tab has a much better screen. Games look good, so I played some Angry Birds and some Jet Stunts Car. Then I browsed the Web for a while. Then I checked Twitter.

The other day I was stranded at the car place while my vehicle was being serviced. Yes, I could have used the Kindle app on my phone to read some stuff, but the Galaxy Tab had a much larger screen. It was like holding a book. I was pleased.

It’s easy to argue that the Tablet doesn’t have a place. You have a phone, and if it’s a smart phone, you can do just about anything on it that you can do on a Tablet. And you have a laptop, which can do more than a phone or a Tablet.

And, of course, you can have all three.

The question is then, do you need all three? Or just two? Or one?

All I know is that I find myself reaching for the Galaxy Tab often, especially when I just want to check something quick and don’t have the time to sit down at PC, or I don’t have access to the PC, and the phone is just too small.

Then again, it could just be the Kool-Aid.

  1. Dan- I said it before and I’ll say it again, a clamshell lid with keyboard, thats all Im waiting for and then I will get an Android device. Can you believe that every single Android device produced, every phone, every tablet, has an exposed screen? Not one single manufacturer has thought of going against the iPhone/iPad form factor and putting a protective lid? Once they make a clamshell tablet (whish will actually be a micro-netbook and no longer a tablet) then finally they will have something that will compete against netbooks.

  2. Brad, I think you’re a genius. Too bad you can’t patent that idea!

  3. Glad to see you have found what the use for tablets. I suppose it is the fact that if you want to quickly look up something on-line or do a bit of social networking, you can just fire up your tablet which will take seconds instead of plugging in a laptop then booting up. Or in my case more then likely plugging or unplugging many different wires from my desktop PC.
