Microsoft Losing Ground to Apple on Campus

Filed under: News — admin @ 7:28 am

Lots of interesting stats (and graphs!) from the University of Virginia regarding students and their computer use. All students, 100 percent, now have computers at school. Nearly all those computers are laptops. Nearly half of them are Apple laptops.

  1. If you look closely at the OS survey graph, you’ll notice that the only time that Windows takes a major hit on the graph is the same year Vista came out. (2007). Then the Windows users go down every year at a steady rate. But wait! In 2009, for the release of Windows 7 the Windows usage still goes down on the graph but only goes down about a third or half as much as it did in the past 3 years. I’d say based on the graph, that Windows is making a comeback.

  2. Could be. The perception out there is that Macs are less-prone to viruses. Even I recommend a MacBook for a college-bound student. But as the Mac numbers increase, the potential for them being hijacked by malware goes up as well. Mac users are just as gullible as Windows users.

It will be interesting to review the same data in a few years to see whether Windows 7 is making a comeback.

Microsoft is also taking a hit with Office 2010, which isn’t selling as well as expected. It’s not really a full update (outside of Outlook). Seriously: Microsoft needs to fire Ballmer and get someone young and smart to replace him.
