Updates!

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

I’ve been swamped. I’m busy finishing the biggest book project I’ve ever done. Here are some quick updates.

The book I’m working on. Because so many people have asked, it’s called Troubleshooting Your PC for Dummies All-In-One Desktop Reference. The title is almost as long as the book. My guess is that it will be in excess of 700 pages, which makes it about the same size as the C For Dummies All-In-One Desktop Reference. Thick.

The ordeal with writing the book is that I decided to write it for both Windows Vista and Windows XP. That means that I’m essentially writing two books, which mathematically takes twice as long. Hopefully I put the text part to bed this week. Then I work on a series of videos.

Man, did I underbid this thing . . .

New MacBooks. On Tuesday (yesterday), Apple introduced a new line-up for their laptops, the MacBooks. The low-price point is $999, which is about $100 too much in my opinion. Then again, it’s Apple and they don’t low-ball their prices.

The rest of the MacBooks are nice. The cases are sleek and well designed, which is what I expect from Apple.

The next product update from Apple should come after Christmas during the annual MacWorld Expo in San Francisco. Hopefully they’ll revamp the Mac Mini, and throw in some other surprises as well. Speaking of which:

Apple surprise. Up on the drool factor is the new Cinema Display Apple introduced yesterday. I have the very first Cinema Display on my Mac, a 20″ model I bought 8 years ago. It still works, but the design is old. Also, I probably paid $3,000 for it. The new Cinema Display is priced at $899, is LED backlit, has built-in speakers, iSight video camera, USB ports, and is sized at 23″. Amazing. Want.

Windows 7. The next version of Windows will be called — are you ready? — Windows 7! That’s because it’s supposedly the seventh version of Windows. The kicker is that it’s not the seventh version.

Internally, the version number for Windows 7 will be 6.1 Here is a humorous blog post from aeroxperience that explains how Windows 7 is anything but the seventh version.
