Social Networking

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

I’ve tried to resist for a long, long time. But I’ve failed.

A few years back, my son’s girlfriend alerted me to a MySpace post made by the lad. She as freaked out and told me to read it. I discovered that I couldn’t read the post unless I signed up for MySpace.

There’s something about the social networking websites that never appealed to me. I have my own web sites, so I didn’t see the need to pay homage to some dot-com startup that would allow me to express my individuality by heavily borrowing copyrighted material from others and claiming it as my own. In other words, I found the sites icky.

Long story short: I signed up for MySpace, read my son’s “alarming” post, and had a good laugh. Oh, how teenagers exaggerate. (His mother felt differently, of course.)

Recently, a friend from high school contacted me about our upcoming 0x1E High School reunion. She urged me to get on Facebook to maintain contact.

Again, I expressed reluctance. But then, something changed inside me and I suddenly — for the first time — found that I actually enjoyed Facebook. Don’t Tell Anyone!

Unlike MySpace, Facebook lacks the pretentiousness of the weird backgrounds and annoying music that clutters most MySpace pages like dross in the bed of a rusted pickup truck. Facebook is quick to update and maintain. It’s adult, and not in the feelthy pictures sense. I find myself visiting there often.

Sadly, you cannot see my Facebook page unless you, too, join Facebook. But if you’re already a member, check out my page; just search for Dan Gookin and you’ll get there.

  1. Update. Okay. I’m a noob. Apparently even if you are on Facebook you cannot see my page unless you send an invitation. Typical. So if you want to see the page, send me an invite. I’ll confirm it. Sorry for the trouble.

Yeah, there he goes, blogging about something he doesn’t know about….

    🙂
