I tolerate computers. I barely tolerate computer companies. Today the choices are rather thin, but I continue to purchase a Macintosh as my design computer and use a PC for writing, programming, and other more traditional computer tasks. That is, until I can run my productivity software under Linux.

Things were different back then. For example, PCs came with floppy drives, no optical disks, and no built-in networking. Wi-Fi didn’t exist. USB? Forget it. If you wanted on the Internet, you purchased a dialup modem. And storage was measured in kilobytes and megabytes. It was a different world.

My silly quest to access and read a 1980s vintage 5¼-inch floppy diskette on a 21st century computer began with extracting the old 5¼-inch floppy drive from a 1990s vintage IBM computer.

The computer industry has roosted upon the SDcard as the new removable storage standard. Unlike the multitude of media cards available ten years ago, the SDcard and the microSD are pretty much what computers, digital cameras, and other devices use for storage. But go back farther in time, and the floppy disk was the rage.

You don’t think about it today, but the process of saving a file was once a specific ordeal that differed from program to program. Even with the same developer, their software would offer various odd ways to save your work. That inconsistency is no longer an issue.
