I have no idea what got into me, but about 14 years ago I decided my office needed its own webcam. Back then, it was a fad.

September 11, 2013Market to Apple’s New iPhone: PffftApple stock is down over 2 percent this morning, one day after two new iPhone flavors were released. Apparently Wall Street is unimpressed with Apple’s latest efforts. This stock deflation (Pffft) is entirely predictable. Where’s the big format iPhone? Where’s the “cheap” iPhone? Come on, Apple! Where is your innovative spirit? Where is the “think differently”? I certainly hope that the fruit company has something truly exciting in the works. Supposedly, Steve Jobs was working on The Next Big thing right before he passed. I remember reading, “It’s going to be awesome!” Steve was known for such bold moves, and many times they paid off. Apple: Do something. Make my life more interesting. Now. Thank you. Watermark MeI see a lot of documents where the watermark feature is used. Mostly it displays the text “Draft” diagonally on the background of every page. That trick’s pretty easy to figure out, but it’s not the limit of what you can do with Word’s watermark feature.

September 9, 2013Fascinating SpamAs Email is entering it’s fifth decade, I’ve noticed that the quantity of spam reaching my inbox has dramatically declined. Not only that, the spam is becoming far more interesting. September 6, 2013What to do With Your Old PhoneYou did it. You finally got rid of that old clunker. It was the “phone you hate.” And now, after suffering through the ordeal of waiting until the magic day the upgrade kicked in, paying for the new device, and questioning that deceptive $30 transfer fee, you have a wonderful new smartphone. Indeed, you are smart. But what about that old phone?

September 4, 2013New Android to be Named KitkatYes, Android 4.4 will be named after the chocolate bar, not “Key Lime Pie,” which is what everyone in the universe was supposing. Silly Apple-esque spoof video shown below:

Manage Your PasswordsOh, please: Don’t tell me that you’re enough of a sucker to use the same password on all your accounts: PC, Email, all those web sites. Please don’t tell me that’s true!

September 3, 2013Apple’s Lack of InnovationOnce upon a time, Apple was the innovator, Microsoft was the imitator. Apple created wildly unique products, many of them becoming industry-changing paradigms. Microsoft was the “me too” that came later, oh and toss in a new “standard” based on the technology they aped from someone else. Microsoft hasn’t changed, but has Apple? Since the iPad, what has Apple offered the tech universe that’s been astoundingly fresh and different? Nada. Yet the stock continues to climb. Perhaps the iWatch will be a breakout product, but even then Samsung’s wrist computer is due out before the end of the month. Apple is languishing. And it’s doubly disappointing for me because, generally speaking, any industry excitement invariably comes from the fruit company.

September 2, 2013Where I Learned To ProgramYou think Windows sucks? It’s a vast improvement over the Days of DOS, with its unhelpful, cryptic command line interface. But that was a friendly field of festive flora compared with the dark dingy pre-DOS environment where I learned to program. Yes, I’m referring to my first computer, the cursed TRS-80.

September 1, 2013Perhaps None of This is RealI’ve thought about this myself: What if our universe isn’t real, but is a computer simulation. Or what would approximate a computer simulation on a grand scale? The question I would have if this existence where simulated, ala The Matrix, would be “What’s the point?” Let me get philosophical: Are we here voluntarily or are we sentenced to life? Either way, the process somehow involves losing most, if not all, memory of any prior existence. Apparently that’s one of the rules and pretty much everyone abides by it. And how can you determine whether or not you’re in a simulation when the only tools available to you are built inside the same construct? It would be like looking for a glitch in a game, an exploit. But not every exploit can be utilized to determine the external environment. Etc. Oh, I could prattle on for hours on such a topic.
