A Picture in Your Document

Shoving a picture into a word processing document isn’t anything new. Even the text-based word processors of the late 1980s could accomplish the feat, albeit rather crudely and not in a manner anyone called “delicious.”

That historical tidbit actually plays into how you can best work with pictures and text with today’s word processors. The secret is to write your text first. Add the pictures later.

In fact, in my own documents, I create placeholders for the pictures. I write something like:

INSERT FIGURE 1

And then leave it at that. The text is on a line by itself, and I’ll often highlight it or put it in another color so I can find it easily later.

When I’m done writing — after at least several drafts — I insert the pictures. The video below shows the technique.
