A Dialup Modem Answers the Phone

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

The first line was for me. The second line was for the computer. Specifically, it was for the computer’s modem.

Is the Network Down?

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

Man, this web page is taking a while to load. The spiny thing is going backwards still, which probably means the Internet is down? Is it? Or is the network slow when the spiny thing goes forwards?

There will Never be ‘Word Lite’

Filed under: Main — Tags: — admin @ 12:01 am

I get lots of email on Microsoft Word. Some of the readers really want to dig into the advanced features. Others are forced converts from the WordPerfect realm. And a few just want to write without having all those obnoxious extra features.

Those users who prefer to write unencumbered ask me the question, “Why can’t Microsoft just create a ‘Lite’ version of Word?” My answer is that they did and no one bought it.

Old Files on a New Computer

Filed under: Main — Tags: — admin @ 12:01 am

One of the things I dread about getting a new computer is the inevitable personality transfer. Yes, the new PC is faster and better than your old clunker (which last week was your treasure and joy). The dreadful part is how to get the files and programs you love transferred from the old computer to the new one.

The New Mac

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

I dearly wish computers would last forever. They can! I’ve had a PC run well for 11 years. Ming the Merciless. He was a great system, but eventually the software grew incompatible, and I had to buy a new PC.

Android Email Settings

Filed under: Main — Tags: — admin @ 12:01 am

The Android mobile operating system keeps getting smarter and smarter. I’m blown away by some of the improvement, and looking forward to Android Marshmallow, coming sometime soon. What I’m eager to find out, however, is whether they’ve fixed the problem of locating email account settings.

To Save Search Results

Filed under: Main — Tags: — admin @ 12:01 am

All operating systems offer the ability to search for files — and inside of files. It’s a big deal, so much so that few people give it another thought. A feature worth a second thought, however, is the ability to save a search and reproduce it later.
