History of the Floppy Disk

Filed under: News — admin @ 9:06 am

I remember the floppy well. I never had a computer that required an 8-inch disk, though I used those disks at the publishing house where I worked.

Yeah, verily, I suffered through stacks of 5 1/4-inch floppy diskettes, and piles upon piles of 3.5-inch diskettes. There was once a whole chapter of PCs For Dummies dedicated to the different types and densities of floppies.

Today, I still have one computer in the garage that has a 5 1/4-inch floppy drive. I also have a “loose” drive that I could install in any computer, but haven’t done so in over 10 years. I have a USB 3.5-inch floppy drive I’ve used from time to time. But with Sony stopping manufacture of floppies in 2010, the era is pretty much over.

Rest in peace, floppy disk.

Woz: The Cloud is Bad

Filed under: News — admin @ 10:47 pm

I agree with Woz: There is value to having stuff on your computer, right there on the mass storage. With stuff on “the cloud,” who owns it? What happens to it? Interesting thoughts.
