Where Have You Been!

Filed under: News — admin @ 10:05 am

Who knows where you go? Google does!

“The Maps app keeps track of your location on the planet Earth,” which is what I write in my various Android For Dummies books. Apparently it keeps track of your location over time as well, which some people might find disturbing.

Wi-Fi Electromagnetic Fields Gonna Git Ya

Filed under: News — admin @ 8:23 am

Oh, here we go again: Another article about the prevalence of malevolent electromagnetic radiation, this time emanating from the gazillions of Wi-Fi networks that invisibly permeate the air around us.

The list of maladies in the article (link below) are generic enough to please any hypochondriac.

The truth? Who knows, but studies like this serve to brighten up an otherwise dull day in the mass media. Face it, something has to feed the appetite for multiple, 24-hour news channels that pump “breaking news” every 20 seconds.

My thoughts? Thigh cancer from keeping cell phones in your pants pockets all the time. That’s not mentioned in the article.

Battle of the (non) Taxi Companies

Filed under: News — admin @ 8:06 am

You probably don’t know this, but taxi companies generally don’t like their competition. They routinely accuse each other of sabotaging rides, stealing customers, and having the police spy on them. That’s nothing new.

What is new is having two eCommerce companies that provide a similar service go into battle with the same enthusiasm.

An Explanation for the S-L-O-W Internet

Filed under: News — admin @ 4:37 pm

Man! The Internet is slow today. I figured it was my hotel (I’m out-of-town, working). The hotel had a great Internet service until last night. I figured it was the hoard of teenagers who have since infested the hotel, each of them with a phone, tablet, and possibly Mom and Dad as well.

But no!

Turns out the Internet is sluggishly crawling because of yet another limit that has been met. It’s going to take some time to fix things, as well.

More Passwords Stolen

Filed under: News — admin @ 7:09 am

The Bad Guys are always at it. This time over 1.2 billion passwords have been lifted. These include email addresses, social security numbers, all sorts of personal information. The article is informative, but doesn’t really say what you can do should your name be among the 1.2 billion.

That’s a big number.

Hello, 911? Facebook is Down!

Filed under: News — admin @ 8:23 am

Last Friday saw a massive outage at Facebook, Inc. The service was absent from the information superhighway for a staggering three hours. Not knowing what to do or how to cope in a world without Friends, Likes, and obnoxious political views, throngs of Americans turned to the government for help: They dialed the public safety emergency number, 9-1-1.

Idiots.

They Love Twitter, but not the Ads

Filed under: News — admin @ 6:22 pm

I find it hilarious!

Twitter’s business model depends on selling ads. Those ads are visible mostly in the Twitter app but also on Twitter’s web page. Yet it seems that Twitter’s growth is coming from users who access the online service through third-party apps that don’t show the ads!

I still can’t figure out how these high-tech companies have a business model that relies upon online advertising. What is that they’re selling?
