It’s the day the incessant warnings actually do stop. You have until midnight tonight to accept Microsoft’s polite-yet-aggressive offer of a free Windows 10 update. After then, the Windows 10 upgrade will come at a cost.

My guess is that most people made the upgrade-or-not decision months ago. Yet, Microsoft continued to pester Windows 7 and Windows 8 users. It was annoying. After today, it’s all stopped!

What am I missing if I don’t upgrade?

You’re missing Windows 10 and whatever new version of Windows 10 is released soon. That’s my guess! I figure the July 29 deadline was set because some upgrade or patch or something is looming in Windows 10’s future. That’s what Microsoft promised when Windows 10 was introduced: It would be the final version of Windows, with annual upgrades. Windows 10 came out on July 29, 2015, so today’s date makes sense.

Will Windows 7 continue to be supported?

Yes, for a while. Microsoft routinely phases out support for older software. Windows XP is no longer supported, as is Windows Vista. At some point in the future, security updates and bug fixes will no longer be released for Windows 7. If you have a Windows 7 computer, you should be good for the rest of your PC’s lifespan. When you get a new PC, however, you’ll probably get Windows 10.

Did you, Dan Gookin, upgrade?

Yes. I upgraded my test computer a year ago. It was painful. Today, that test system runs Windows 10 as does one of my laptops. The rest of the PCs in the office run Windows 7.

How much will it cost me if I dilly and dally and don’t get the upgrade?

Windows 10 Pro is available from the Microsoft Store for $199.99; Windows Home sells for $119.99.

Okay. So I’m not upgrading.

You’re cool! Now I’m going to wait to see what Microsoft releases as far as a “new” version of Windows 10 in the coming weeks.

[3

post-8477","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-main
["GET
