I believe I may have received the final Windows 10 upgrade warning. It was up on my Windows 7 PC screen this morning, shiny and bright. The question is, if I decline now, will it continue to bug me? Is the nightmare finally over?

\nFor the past several months, I’ve been declining the Windows 10 upgrade several times a day. I’m content with Windows 7 on my writing computer and I don’t want to change — even though I like Windows 10. I use it and appreciate it on several computers.<\/p>\n

The normal update nag looks like Figure 1. It pops up every so often and you dismiss it so nothing happens. This process works as long as your Windows Update settings are configured to download but not install<\/em> updates. If you’ve configured to download and install, Windows 10 may just install itself without your direct approval.<\/p>\n

Today’s pop-up annoyance looks like Figure 2. It finally appears as if the “Decline Free Offer” button might just suppress the notices once and for all! Could it be true?<\/p>\n

The deal with July 29 (which is a Friday) is that after that date, the free upgrade doesn’t apply to existing Windows 7 and Windows 8 (barf) owners. After then, I’m guessing that you’ll have to pay for a Windows 10 upgrade.<\/p>\n

Further, I guess that a new version of Windows 10 looms on the horizon. Microsoft will probably announce it on August 1. They’ll call it “Windows 10 Optimus Prime” or something silly, and it will have all these nifty-keen-o updates and such. All Windows 10 owners get the update free, just like Mac owners get the new OS X free. That could be why Microsoft is pushing the Windows 10 update so aggressively.<\/p>\n

So I clicked the Decline Free Offer button (Figure 2), and I saw Figure 3.<\/p>\n
