Did they just want to distance themselves that much from the wretched Windows 8? Or did a more serious excuse exist?<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nThe public reason Microsoft offered is that too many programs check for version numbers by comparing the operating system string. I just don&#8217;t buy that, but apparently it&#8217;s true. While I would code a program to look at the operating system version number, the article (link below) lists a link that shows over 4,000 programs that actually do compare strings to check Windows versions. That&#8217;s just dumb, but it&#8217;s real.<\/p>\n<p>The other day I played with a Windows 10 beta. It looked familiar, showed a few minor upgrades and improvements over Windows 7.
