{"id":63,"date":"2008-04-25T00:01:10","date_gmt":"2008-04-25T07:01:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wambooli.com\/blog\/?p=63"},"modified":"2008-04-25T06:48:17","modified_gmt":"2008-04-25T13:48:17","slug":"i-miss-the-tramp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wambooli.com\/blog\/?p=63","title":{"rendered":"I Miss the Tramp"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ll bet you&#8217;re probably too young or perhaps too fresh on the computer scene to remember perhaps one of the best product icons of the industry.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nHe was the IBM Tramp, modeled after the popular Charlie Chaplin character in many early movies.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wambooli.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/ibm-tramp.png\" alt=\"ibm tramp\" title=\"ibm-tramp\" width=\"305\" height=\"400\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-64\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wambooli.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/ibm-tramp.png 305w, https:\/\/www.wambooli.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/ibm-tramp-228x300.png 228w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 305px) 100vw, 305px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The character appeared in advertising, print and television. (This is well before the Internet.) He never really had a name, but everyone recognized him as the Charlie Chaplin tramp character. Like that character he would do amazing things; some of the television commercials were elaborate and remarkably well choreographed. <a href=\"http:\/\/video.google.com\/videoplay?docid=-618144918374431620&#038;hl=en\" target=\"else\">Here is an example<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Back in the tramp&#8217;s day, IBM ruled the world. The other PCs you could buy were generically called <em>PC clones<\/em>. A clone being an exact copy of an original, or with PC, a copy so close as to run all IBM PC software but not to incense the ire of IBM&#8217;s corporate lawyers.<\/p>\n<p>There has never really been a PC advertising icon that has reached the tramp&#8217;s Q level (his ability to be recognized as an icon and properly identified with a product). Apple&#8217;s logo comes close, but it&#8217;s not animated. Microsoft&#8217;s advertisements are atrociously unmemorable.
