I see that quite a few folks are using the Wambooli Technology Dictionary. I hope that you enjoy it. The Dictionary is a work in progress for me. I plan on updating it often.

Since it was made public, I’ve added over a dozen terms to the Dictionary. Some of these have been slap-myself-in-the-forehead type of terms. Some have been new to me. A lot of them have been to fix cross-reference errors in the Dictionary. So please don’t feel that you’re using the Dictionary in vain. I am paying attention. For example, thanks to whomever suggested the word Tux. I didn’t know who Tux was. Now I do!

Video Update

Unbeknownst to me, yet beknownst to some readers, the Wambooli Video page isn’t working properly. That’s probably due to an older version of Flash installed on your PC. Regardless, I’ve uploaded all the videos to YouTube.

You can now visit my YouTube home page to see all the videos, which should work on everyone’s computer. In the future, I’ll continue to post videos here as well as on YouTube.

Valentine’s Troubleshooting Odyssey

You may recall from a previous blog post that I’ve been having trouble with my test computer, Valentine. The problem is software. I determined this by starting the computer in Safe Mode; in that mode the computer would never crash. But in normal mode, the thing crashed more often than drunk drivers at a demolition derby.

I did a lot of troubleshooting in Safe Mode, starting and stopping the PC time after time. I disabled a driver here, a driver there. I disabled startup programs and services. Still, the problem persisted. Eventually I used an alternative logon account. On that account, the PC didn’t crash. Therefore I narrowed the problem down to only those programs loaded in my account.

The culprit turned out to be either the Windows Media Center or the Windows Sync program. I’ve had problems with Windows Sync on laptops as well, so I blame it and pass along this tidbit: Do not use Windows Sync. Fortunately, the program is available only in Windows Vista.

The fate of Valentine was sealed, however. Yesterday I downgraded him to Windows XP. It was a simple operation: I added a spare, internal hard drive. Then I booted with an XP disc to installed XP on that second hard drive. I’ll stick Val’s original hard drive in my new Monster Game Machine that’s coming sometimes today (with Vista). That way I’ll easily be able to restore files and such from the old drive.

Microsoft v. Yahoo. Apparently Microsoft is hell bent on acquiring Yahoo. Read this letter yourself and see whether Steve Ballmer comes off as angry and frustrated. It makes me wonder what the heck is going on at Microsoft.

Windows 7 Sooner Than Later. As support for Windows XP is being dropped like green poo ice from an airplane, Microsoft is making plans for Windows 7. According to Mr. Gates, Windows 7 will probably be released sometime next year. That usually means 2010, but according to this article, Mr. Gates might really mean 2009. That will be something to see! Vista? What’s Vista?

Lots of stuff going on here Wambooliland.
