For a brief period of time on Tuesday and early Wednesday morning, it was version 2.6. The problem? I couldn’t log in.

As a dutiful PC troubleshooter, I checked the WordPress support site and discovered that I wasn’t alone. Supposedly the problem would resolve itself in 24 hours. It did not. So I removed the upgrade.

Continuing my prowess as a PC troubleshooter, I immediately restored the backup of the old database file. That’s why it took a while for Wednesday’s post (Making Vista Faster, Part II) to appear. It might also explain why you couldn’t log in or make comments, if that was the case. Anyway, after restoring the old backed up database, I also restored the files from the previous version of WordPress. It was an ordeal, but as you can now see, the blog is working again.

Two lessons to be learned here!

The first lesson is to always backup your stuff. Backup is not System Restore. While I recommend running System Restore before an upgrade, the Internet doesn’t have System Restore. So when upgrading Internet stuff, I backup. Backup is better than System Restore, anyway.

The second lesson to be learned is that not every upgrade is worthy. I’ve had good luck updating WordPress software in the past. But from now on, I’ll be checking the support forums for information on all upgrades before I take the plunge. Hopefully, this ugly situation will never happen again.

[3

post-129","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-main
["GET
