Is Windows 7 Really Selling Well?

There’s a humorous Get A Mac ad out. In the ad, PC (John Hodgman) promises Mac (Justin Long) that, unlike the previous version of Windows, there will be no problems with Windows 7. Then the ad does a flashback and, lo, it turns out that PC has always made such a promise.

Sometimes I think annoyance is a design element when it comes to computers. For all the wonderful things that work well, consistently, and for which I’m pleased, up pops a tiny irritating pimple of discontent. Recently, that pimple is Adobe Flash.

It’s been a wild ride. I was once just another computer book author, which is not the most glamorous type of author. At one time it was insanely profitable. Then I hit it really big with DOS For Dummies and the entire For Dummies phenomenon. It turned an industry on its ear.

Word Weirdness, Part II

Another weird Word thing is Word’s obscure and seldom-used keyboard commands for copying or moving blocks of text. I assume that these commands are probably hold-overs from the original, DOS (text-based) version of Word in the 1980s. Who knows?

Word Weirdness, Part I

There are lots of weird things you can do in Word. Now that I’m revising my Word for Dummies book for the Office 2010 version of Word, I’ve once again stumbled upon some of the more oddball aspects of the programs, stuff I’d write about if I had the room in the book, but stuff that’s otherwise not really that important. No, it’s just weird.

WOW! They’re done with WOW!

My kids shocked me last week. My sons Jonah and Jeremiah both decided to quit the Massively Multiplayer Online Roll-Playing Game, World of Warcraft. I’m surprised, yet pleased.
