Independence Day USA

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

Today is July 4, Independence Day here in the US. So I’m taking the day off from updating the blog. I’ll be doing some work on and off through the day, between the festivities.

Enjoy the 4th, and be safe!

Cringely Claims the PC is Done

Filed under: News — admin @ 7:36 am

Specifically, he states that you’re now using your second-to-last PC ever. I disagree: The PC is a business tool, not consumer electronics. Mobile devices like tablets and smartphones are consumer devices. For most people, mobile devices will take over their computer duties. But for professionals, and in an office environment, PCs will continue to dominate for decades.

Microsoft Drops Windows 8 Upgrade Prices

Filed under: News — admin @ 3:21 pm

Like anyone would care, the price to upgrade your existing Windows XP/Vista/7 computer to the travesty that is Windows 8 has been reduced. It’s a downloadable copy, for just under $40.

As someone who has been forced to use Windows 8 (granted, a beta copy) for the past few weeks, and I tell you that I’d happily pay $40 not to use it.

Windows 8 Down in Flames

Filed under: Main — Tags: — admin @ 12:01 am

I’ve been using Windows 8 for a while now. Let me tell you: It really sucks. I wrote before that I didn’t like it, but being forced to use Windows 8, especially under the guise of trying to write a book for beginners, is very painful.

How to Buy that Over-Priced Ink

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

Printers are cheap! Ink is expensive. So expensive, I don’t need to tell you. The entire Ink Refill On-The-Cheap industry proves it. Hell, printer ink is probably the most expensive liquid substance you can buy. But that’s not my topic.

I Remember EDLIN

Filed under: Main — Tags: — admin @ 12:01 am

Back in the Days of DOS, EDLIN was the command prompt text editor. Or, to be precise, it was the DOS line editor. Anyone know what a line editor is?

Is Blogging Dead?

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

I blog because it’s a great way to write updates, not only just commentary but also some how-tos and additional information for my books. Writing a blog post is a handy way to do that, and much easier than writing one of my Wambooli Dispatches, which is an HTML document and requires a lot more effort and work.
