Today marks the official launch of my new YouTube channel. Starting today and every weekday hence, I’m uploading a video. The first collection consists of tips on using Microsoft Word. Later videos will expand to other topics.

A Political Dilemma

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

Since the early 1990s, when my writing career first took off, I’ve taken advantage of the US President’s picture in my books. To avoid legal entanglements, I use a public domain image of a well-recognized figure. I choose the US President’s image as a tradition, but now I’m having trepidations.

Introducing Word’s Page Movement Group

Filed under: Main — Tags: — admin @ 12:01 am

I’m not sure if this update applies to all versions of Word 2016 or just the Office 365 release, but here it is: Document flow can be altered in Print Layout view so that pages in flow right-to-left instead of top-to-bottom. I figure this change came about because nearly all PC monitors these days are widescreen.

The Quest for Floppy, Part III

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

In our last episode, I had ordered an $8 adapter, a male-to-male PATA adapter, so that I could use a $30 USB gizmo to read a 5¼-inch floppy diskette on a modern PC.

The gizmo has finally arrived. From China. Via their version of snail mail. But it’s here!

The problem with our politically-charged environment is that people take their orders from the media or from political parties before they stop to think. As a case in point, the Trump administration repealed a recent rule made by the Obama administration regarding Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

The Downside of the SSD

“Do you want an SSD in that?” For a moment, the question tempted me. I was buying a new PC and as we worked down the hardware list, the dealer posed the question. The traditional, spinning hard disk drive (HDD) was cheaper, but the solid state drive (SSD) was so fast it was scary.

Where is Windows 10.1?

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

Time for some musings here at Wambooli central.

Thoughts cross my mind regard the upcoming Windows 10.1 (or whatever it will be called), some PorchCam updates, the end of winter, and the PATA adapter I need to continue my efforts to read a 5¼-inch floppy diskette.

What Adobe’s Embrace of Linux Could Mean

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

I tolerate computers. I barely tolerate computer companies. Today the choices are rather thin, but I continue to purchase a Macintosh as my design computer and use a PC for writing, programming, and other more traditional computer tasks. That is, until I can run my productivity software under Linux.
