How to Shut Down the Internet

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

I had a great discussion with my Friday morning coffee group about how the Internet is going to change in a few years. It’s just a prediction, but my coffee group found it shocking.

The Web’s Child

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

You may have read about Tay. She was Microsoft’s attempt at artificial intelligence, designed to interact and learn from random people on the Web. Tay was mercifully killed less than 24 hours after she was born. And we’re all better for it.

Changes at the Google Play Store

Filed under: Main — Tags: — admin @ 12:01 am

Don’t worry about my Android For Dummies books being out-of-date on a few topics; Google changes things almost as soon as I write about them. Case in point: As I’m writing this post, the icons for the “Play” apps have changed.

Fun With Chromecast, er, Google Cast

Filed under: Main — Tags: — admin @ 12:01 am

Google has renamed Chromecast to Google Cast. If you have any Chromecast dongles dangling from any of your HDTVs or computer monitors, then you probably noticed the update a few weeks back. You’re killing some time with your mobile gizmo in an airport or cafe. The network has a password, so it’s “secured.” So is it okay for you to log into a website, do your online shopping, or transfer cash with online banking?

Old Files I Keep But Can’t Open

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

Occasionally I browse my published archives. They don’t go back all the way since I lost a bunch of files when I upgraded computers in the 1990s. So some stuff is all gone now, but what about the oddball files that remain for other books?

The Hat Trick

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

Computer nerds enjoy the cryptic and the arcane. Specifically, symbols are something that the most Aspergy among us thrive in using. They offer the joy of being both convenient and cryptic, which should delight anyone, even a Vulcan.
