Coordinating Email with Your Android Mobile Gizmo

Filed under: Main — Tags: — admin @ 12:01 am

A new message floats in on my phone. It’s Steve. I need to phone him, but I need to do so when I’m at my computer. Do I mark the message as “unread” so that I can pick it up again on the PC? And if I delete the message on my phone, is it also deleted on the computer?

Filed under: Main — Tags: — admin @ 12:01 am

Here it is in the new year, 2018, and you haven’t yet had time to write 2017 on any of your checks. Time for my annual predictions!

PorchCam 2017 Year In Review

Filed under: Main — Tags: — admin @ 12:01 am

This year saw the demise of PorchCam 2.3 and the birth of PorchCam 2.4. It also saw a software upgrade, so that the images are taken at given intervals instead of randomly as people visit the page. The result is an interesting collection of images that review the past year — quite a few of them, in fact.

My 2017 Predictions in Review

Filed under: Main — Tags: — admin @ 1:01 am

O! Why do I bother? I don’t think I’ve actually predicted anything, other than the correct name of the iPad when it came out. I wasn’t alone on that prediction. Still, the process gives me something to do so. Here’s this past year’s predictions in review:

The Perils of Real-Time Collaboration

Filed under: Main — Tags: — admin @ 12:01 am

Online collaboration is a new feature in Microsoft Word, so new that it really doesn’t work yet. While Microsoft is trying, Google has done it properly with their Google Docs. The problem, of course, is that your collaborators may dive in and offer suggestions when you’re not quite ready.

The Relentless Software Update Curve

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

I just suffered through another Mac OS X upgrade and the question lingers, “Why?” The OS has been pretty darn stable. I can understand security patches coming out monthly, which is how the Android OS updates. But a new major version of the OS, plus several minor updates throughout the year, is making me weary.

Lots of Pi

Originally it was on a lark. I wanted to buy the $20 “computer on a card.” Physically, the thing is the same size as a playing card. It’s a fully functional computer: SD card storage, USB interfaces, networking, sound. It’s a Raspberry Pi.

The Evolution of the User

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

The gizmos we have today would be marvels 50 years ago. I can’t imagine explaining to my 1960s Grandmother all the miraculous things a smartphone could do. She just wouldn’t believe so much could be packed into the device the size of a cigarette case. (That’s a 1960s reference.)

No, the big difference isn’t in technology, it’s in the users.

No More Room for Your Apps

Filed under: Main — Tags: — admin @ 12:01 am

The decision is difficult. When you buy a phone, do you pay for the $599 model with 32GB of RAM or pony up the extra $100 for the 64GB model? And who cares! After all, how can you ever fill all that memory?
