Your PC has Many Fans

The last quiet computer I owned was my TRS-80 Model 4P. Since then, all my PCs make noise — and not just from the speakers. Modern computers have fans to help keep them cool. A typical PC can have up to four of them or more.

Chrome to Squish Obnoxious Web Advertising

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

The next version of Chrome will do something you really want: It will suppress what Google has defined as obnoxious online ads. This list includes advertising videos that automatically play, pop-ups that block most of the screen, and other annoyances. Coincidentally, Google obtains the bulk of its revenue through online ads. I suppose a relationship doesn’t exist between the two items.

My Week at Lynda

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

I’ve been visiting the Lynda campus for about four years now. It’s such an amazing place with smart, energetic people. Going there is like visiting a resort, though it’s work. And I suppose when work is fun, you’ve found the best thing to do.

My Own Illustrator

Screencasting Wars

Filed under: Main — Tags: — admin @ 12:01 am

It’s been a few years since we cut the cable. Now I have several choices for my viewing pleasure. I have my computer, my tablet, and my phone. I have a Nexus Player box on the Big TV. I can also screencast from my Android devices as well as my PCs. Because our TVs have Chromecast dongles attached, I can cast to any screen that’s active — but so can any other user on the network.

Ten Years

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

This blog went live on January 28, 2008. It was designed as a successor to my weekly newsletter, the Weekly Wambooli Salad. I doubted the blog would last this long, yet here I am 10 years later.

Make the Switch to IMAP

A few weeks back, I wrote about coordinating email on Android devices. The specific issue is with POP3 email accounts, the kind offered by traditional ISPs. Based on some feedback and research, I have changed my opinion: To put it bluntly, ditch the POP3 account.

Where are the Android Tablets?

Filed under: Main — Tags: — admin @ 12:01 am

I don’t recall suffering this type of frustration in a long time. Probably back when I was trying to find SCSI devices in the late 1990s and the standard was just starting to sunset.
