There it is again! This time it’s a notice for me to update my V Cast Media Manager program. I don’t use that program. I don’t want to use that program. I don’t want to update that program. What to do? What to do?

October 4, 2012October 3, 2012The Phone is a Computer, Right?Cell phone users! You are too complacent! Your phones are interesting toys, but why aren’t they exploiting their full-on power as a computer? Why aren’t the manufacturers doing the same things to smartphones that have made computers so useful?

October 1, 2012My Favorite Version of WindowsIt would have to be Windows 7. Yep, of all the Windows releases out there, Windows 7 is the one I’d install on a new computer, the one that I prefer to use most of the time. But mine is not a full-on love affair.

August 29, 2012History of the Floppy DiskI remember the floppy well. I never had a computer that required an 8-inch disk, though I used those disks at the publishing house where I worked. Yeah, verily, I suffered through stacks of 5 1/4-inch floppy diskettes, and piles upon piles of 3.5-inch diskettes. There was once a whole chapter of PCs For Dummies dedicated to the different types and densities of floppies. Today, I still have one computer in the garage that has a 5 1/4-inch floppy drive. I also have a “loose” drive that I could install in any computer, but haven’t done so in over 10 years. I have a USB 3.5-inch floppy drive I’ve used from time to time. But with Sony stopping manufacture of floppies in 2010, the era is pretty much over. Rest in peace, floppy disk.

August 17, 2012Keep Yourself on ICEWhat happens if someone finds your phone? What happens if they also find you next to your phone and you’re unable to communicate? August 6, 2012Google’s Play Music App Sabotages WMA FilesThis is petty. Once upon a time you could import music from your PC into your Android device. Not any more! August 5, 2012Woz: The Cloud is BadI agree with Woz: There is value to having stuff on your computer, right there on the mass storage. With stuff on “the cloud,” who owns it? What happens to it? Interesting thoughts.

July 20, 2012How Google May Win in the Voice WarsEver wonder why Google offered a free 411 telephone directory service about eight years ago? Or why Google knows what you’re searching for even when you can’t type or spell? It’s all part of a nefarious plot!
