App Updates
- Gmail - Chapter 10
- In what is bound to be the first of many app updates mentioned here on Wambooli, the Gmail app has some new features as of January 2011. I review the most obvious feature here.
- Facebook - Chapter 12
- It's not a common update, but the Facebook app does change and those changes make it behave differently from what's described in the book. Click here to review the latest Facebook app update.
- Google Maps - Chpater 13
- The Maps app updates quite frequently, which means that what you see on your phone may not always match what's printed in in the book. Click here to read about some of the latest features in Google Maps.
- YouTube - Chapters 14 & 17
- The YouTube app has a new look and feel, plus some minor changes that affect the book. See the errata (above) for details specific to your book. General information on the YouTube update is found here.
- Android Market - Chapter 18
- The Android Market is now the Google Play Store. Read my update information here for a quick overview of the changes.
Errata
There have been many changes since the book went to press. These are due to software updates that have taken place and will, doubtless, continue to happen as you own your Droid X2.
- Page 30
- The Droid X2 has been updated to include the Sleep command on its Phone Options menu (Figure 2-4). The paragraph at the bottom of the page, which describes the Sleep option for the original Droid X, now applies to both devices.
- Page 35, Figure 3-1
- The Google web site has changed its look from what's shown in the Figure. You may see a prompt asking whether you want Google to remember your location: Touch the Share Location button to activate that feature.
- Pages 48 and 49
- The onscreen keyboard has changed subtly. There are tiny numbers on the top row, which can be accessed by long-pressing the keys Q through P.
- Page 53
- Step 1 no longer works. Instead, follow the directions for the original Droid X.
- Page 57
- The Droid X2 uses the polygon for positioning the cursor, not the target icon. The magnification bubble no longer appears.
- Page 58 - Selecting Text
- Text selection works differently: The best way to select text is to long-press it. Choose the command Select Word. Use the start and ending markers, which look different from Figure 4-11, to mark block.
- Page 120 and 121
- The name of the My Accounts app has changed. It's now called Accounts. They apparently dropped the "My" in the name.
- Page 146
- Step 3, choose Accounts.
- Page 166
- After choosing the Get Directions button you may see the route mapped on the screen as opposed to the list shown in Figure 13-6. To see the list, touch the List button found at the bottom left corner of the screen.
- Page 171
- To delete an image just after you took it, touch the image preview as described in the first check mark item on the page. Then press the Menu soft button and choose the Delete command. Touch the OK button to confirm. The Menu button (shown in the margin) is available only with the original Droid X Camera app.
- Page 177
- Step 3, there are several choices available for video resolution, not just four.
- Page 248
- The callout for HDMI notification in Figure 20-4 is incorrect. The callout is pointing to the USB notification; the HDMI notification is to the right.
- Page 280
- Step 2, choose Accounts.
- Page 283
- Step 5, the button may be labeled "Stop" in addition to "Force Stop."
- Page 285
- I've heard from one reader who has successfully connected his Droid X2 to a Bluetooth wireless keyboard. I know it can be done with other Android phones, but try as I might, I just can't get my Droid X2 to do it!
