Yes! I'm in an Opera.

Or, actually, an operetta: The Mikado, written by Gilbert & Sullivan in 1885 and being performed in February 2002 at our community theater. I'm taking on the role of Ko-Ko, the Lord High Executioner. I sing. I dance. I almost get to cut off someone's head! Great fun.

These pages document my experience with the show.

The Set

I'm designing the set and lights for this show. Last December (2001) I created a 1" scale model of the set. See the model. I also drew up plans for construction. It's an unusual set, so we've allotted three weeks for construction as opposed to our normal two. (Yes, we typically put up a show in 13 days, often less than that.)

The stage under construction.

Above you see Tom and Jeanie talking. Behind them (hard to see) is Vince working on the Moon Gate. He plays the Mikado! You can see the Shinto arch SR, which is more obvious in the model. Here's a better view of the arch. And here is a shot of one of KoKo's house's doors under construction.

Alas, I'm gone for the majority of construction this coming week. Tom (pictured above in the white shirt) will be taking more photos of construction while I'm gone. I plan on updating this page when I return.

By the way, because The Mikado is in the public domain, we will be selling video cassettes of our production. I'll also be placing some video snippets of the show on this web page for your downloading amusement.
