Dear Windows, Why Did You Randomly Restart?

For me, few things beat getting a new computer. I enjoy setting up and configuring, making new adjustments, and getting it all just so. Occasionally, however, I forget to change one setting. Specifically, it’s the setting that seems to cause a perfectly good, brand new computer to randomly restart itself. That’s annoying.

Re-Associating a File

When you use a program to create a file, that file is associated with the program. The link is made based on the filename extension, which is the last part of the filename appearing after the period. For example, .DOCX files are associated with Microsoft Word. That system isn’t the best, but it works. When it doesn’t, you can re-associate the files.

Flash Crash

Mobile devices — including Android and iOS — don’t run Adobe Flash. That’s a source of frustration for many people, but there’s a good reason for disabling Flash: It crashes.

The Good Ol’ Computer Tune-Up

Taking your car in for a tune-up was one of those things everyone did back in the olden times. It required my waiting in the mechanic’s lobby, reading dusty copies of magazines only someone who didn’t need to take their car to a mechanic would enjoy reading. And then, after several minutes and half a wallet of cash, my automobile would be running sweet.

But what about a computer tune-up?

Windows 7 and System Restore

The Restore Point is a brilliant idea, introduced in some ancient version of Windows. In Windows 7, however, Microsoft sought to obfuscate your ability to set a manual Restore Point. So successful were they, that setting a Restore Point and rebooting doesn’t work.

Wee Li’l Icons All in a Row

It started out as the Status Bar. Some Windows veterans may still refer to it that way, but somewhere along the line the name changed: Notification Area. It’s that spot on the far right of the Windows taskbar that overflows with teensy icons — or not, depending on how it’s configured.

I’ve Never Filled Up a Hard Drive
