Power Supply Goes Pop!

It seems like just a few months ago, I replaced a power supply in my son’s PC. And just the other day, the power supply killed itself.

Another Keyboard to Lust For

I’ve written about my keyboard obsession many times. Yes, I pay more to have a fully-mechanical keyboard for my computers. Being a fan of the old typewriter, I enjoy typing and want a keyboard that respects my preferences. But am I willing to pay $280 for my latest crush: The QWERKYWRITER?

The Keyboard Adores USB 2.0

It’s been awhile since it mattered which port you used to connect a PC’s keyboard. Back in the old, old days, you had to use the DIN port — and the PC had to be turned off when you connected or disconnected the keyboard. Then came the PS/2 ports, one for the mouse and another for the PC. Today, everything is USB, so you’d think that using any old USB port for the keyboard would be okay, right?

Nope!

Giving Away an Old PC

Filed under: Main — Tags: — admin @ 12:01 am

Do people still give away old PCs? The real question is, “How old?” Because very old PCs, like 6 or more years, are more of a burden than a practical use for anyone. Old PCs run slow. They malfunction. They die. They can’t run new software. But when you want to give away an old PC, what do you do?

Once Upon a Time, PCs had a Sleep Button

Filed under: Main — Tags: — admin @ 12:01 am

The new computer was a big one, a tower system. It barely fit under my desk. On the front I saw several blinking lights, one for each disk drive. It also featured several buttons and other fancy lights next to each button. I recognized the Power button, thanks it’s universal power symbol (shown above). But the other button had a crescent moon icon. What was it?

Feeding My Scanner Addiction

It’s not that I scan a lot of things. I prefer to have a scanner as a peripheral because occasionally I like to scan a document or photo.

Dangerous Connections

Wi-Fi is everywhere, but not safe everywhere. To help you accept that fact, Google can be quite aggressive when you attempt to connect to a bogus or insecure network. If you’re using the Chrome web browser, perhaps you’ve seen the message:

Keyboard Snobbery Explained

Filed under: Main — Tags: — admin @ 12:01 am

The typical computer user looks at a keyboard and thinks, “Well, I suppose it has all the proper keys in the right place. Yep! I’ll take it.” But when you’re a keyboard snob, as I confess to be, other factors play into how you select a keyboard.

Power Strip Insanity

Filed under: Main — Tags: — admin @ 12:01 am

Power strips are pretty common. Not only do I have them in my office, but the HDTV has one. Even the kitchen TV has a power strip. And they’re not just those boxy sticks with a row of plugs on them. Power strips can be quite complicated, which makes the choosing and buying process frustrating.
