Add Some RAM

The best, easiest, and cheapest upgrade you can make to any computer is to add more memory. The process isn’t that difficult, yet the benefits are seen immediately: Programs run better and everything goes more smoothly, thanks to all that roomy RAM.

Ten Hours Without Internet

When I upgraded my Internet recently, I received a new modem. It was flakey, so I exchanged it. We’ve had good service since then and I’m quite pleased. Now when the modem goes from three happy lights to one sad and one blinking light, I know it’s the cable service and not the device to blame.

Stop the Boop-De-Doop

It’s something you hear when you connect a thumb drive. It’s something you puzzle about when the noise happens randomly. It’s the boo-doop, which is what I call the default sound that plays in Windows when a new devices is added.

Your Super Secret Email Address

Banking, shopping, and even paying your taxes can be done online. Unlike the 1990s, people are less paranoid about security, nor do they fret over typing in a credit card number. A secure website means you’re most likely safe, though you can still take extra precaution by using a super secret email address.

Monitor Resolution Update

Beyond the processor, one of the most murky regions where names, numbers, and abbreviations lurk is the computer monitor. Evolution doesn’t remove the old names, but it does settle down the field to something more reasonable.

Thumb Drive Removal Philosophy

Is a thumb drive a medium of exchange, designed to be inserted, used (copied to or from), and then removed? Or should a thumb drive stay mounted on your PC, sticking out from the console like a tongue or tiny diving board?

The Downside of the SSD

“Do you want an SSD in that?” For a moment, the question tempted me. I was buying a new PC and as we worked down the hardware list, the dealer posed the question. The traditional, spinning hard disk drive (HDD) was cheaper, but the solid state drive (SSD) was so fast it was scary.
