Metered Connections

A metered connection is an option for limited access to a wireless network you pay to access or one that offers only a limited quantity of data. The reason you set such an option is to avoid a surcharge once your quote evaporates. The problem is that some devices automatically assume that the Wi-Fi connection is metered when it isn’t.

You’re killing some time with your mobile gizmo in an airport or cafe. The network has a password, so it’s “secured.” So is it okay for you to log into a website, do your online shopping, or transfer cash with online banking?

Here’s another 2016 prediction, one that I should have thought of earlier, but it just occurred to me: Laptops will start coming with both GPS and mobile data network radios. The change makes sense, and it might already be happening.

It’s a new year! Things are slowly getting back to normal, with the chaos of the extended Saturnalia finally concluding. I mean, nothing gets done the last two weeks of the year, right? So why not take advantage of the lull and do some computer cleaning?

My Bluetooth Headset

I enjoy computing on the road, taking my laptop to a café or coffee shop. The problem I frequently have is the noise. To combat that issue, I’ve invested in a wireless, noise-canceling headset.

My New, Teensy Laptop

Subnotebook laptops were popular a few years back. These tiny laptops were cheap, usually in the $200 range. They had a tiny screen and a tiny keyboard and they ran basic Windows programs and that was about it. On, and they used standard AA batteries for power.

Another One Bites the Dust

This post was originally about trouble I had at a coffee shop trying to connect my laptop to their Wi-Fi network. That was an ordeal, and a puzzle I attempted to solve, but in the bigger picture it turns out that the laptop is on its final breath.

Up is Up

On a touchscreen it makes sense: You drag your finger up the screen and the document scrolls up with your finger. That’s how objects move in the real world. A laptop’s touchpad may not exhibit that similar behavior.
