And Yet Another Facebook Rant

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

Recently, I posted a Wamblog news link regarding Facebook. It included a wonderful video explaining exactly why I’m kind of disgusted with Facebook. I still believe that the service Facebook once offered is worthy, but what they’re doing with it now is not. To prove my point, allow me to reminisce about the old days of computer magazines.

Google Glass Citation Dismissed in CA

Filed under: News — admin @ 4:35 pm

Apparently, for now, it’s okay to drive while wearing Google Glass, providing that you can convince the cop that the device isn’t on.

This Google Glass stuff just keeps getting weirder and weirder.

Paragraph Formatting Dissection

A paragraph is anything from a single word to multiple run-on sentences. As master of those words, it’s your job to write them down and hopefully have them all make sense. As master of the document, it’s Word’s job to format that paragraph, adding space for readability as well as presentation.

The Problem with Facebook

Yeah, here I go with another anti-Facebook rant, although in this case it’s someone else doing the ranting. spot-on.

This Game Really Ticks Me Off

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

The Minesweeper game has been bundled with Windows since version 3.1 back in 1992. It predates Windows, of course, having been a computer game popular in the mainframe days back in the 1960s and 1970s.

Why I Keep These Things

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

Fishing around in my computer boneyard the other day, I happened upon an old 1997 Zip disk. A 100MB Zip disk, which was a popular form of removable storage about 15 years ago. The disk was labeled 1997. Who knows what magic memories it held?

Serious Dropbox Problems

Filed under: News — admin @ 9:25 am

I’m a pretty avid fan of Dropbox. I use the file synchronizing service frequently to coordinate files between my desktop computer and my laptop/tablets. It works like a charm, much better than the old Briefcase and whatever Windows Sync utility Microsoft is currently using.

Last Friday Dropbox vanished from the Internet. Apparently they were updating software and the update pretty much yanked everyone’s account off line. I was unable to sync some screen shots on Saturday, let alone all the files for my current major project.

As of today (Sunday morning), any new files I add or remove form my Dropbox folders are synchronized. The major folder reorganization I attempted Saturday, however, is still “Updating.”

The most disappointing aspect of this issue are the whiners on the Dropbox support forums. Dropbox is free for most people. Yet they bitch and bellyache about the service being down like they’re paying for the service. That’s really sad.

Sounds About Right

Getting sound on your computer set to the correct level is an exercise in frustration. There are just too many locations for setting volume, and then not everyone who creates the sound really knows what they’re doing.

Smartphone Battery Management

You don’t need to worry about when to charge your phone. My rule is simple: When the phone needs a charge, plug it in. And you should never be worried about the Dreaded Memory Effect when it comes to your mobile gizmos.

One of My Early Games

Filed under: Main — admin @ 12:01 am

Like many other budding programmers, I wrote my share of games. Most of them involved guessing numbers, but I also wrote racing games, card games, and the usual. That was until I bought my first computer mouse.
