Windows 10 Update

The Windows 10 beta continues to evolve. In a move to further distance the new operating system from it’s disastrous grandfather (Windows 8, because the father would have been Windows 9), the latest beta is missing the Charms Bar and the Start Screen.

My DOS Utilities, Dead

Each time I setup a new PC, I copy over my all-time favorite DOS utilities. They dwell in a special folder, COMMANDS\, found off my main profile folder in Windows. I even configure the DOS prompt program, CMD.EXE, so that it references that folder, giving me command line access to my favorite text mode tools. And now they don’t work.

In a shockingly logical move, Microsoft has announced that the Windows 10 upgrade will be free, available at no cost to current users of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. The message here is clear: Windows XP users, you suck.

There’s Nothing Like Travel

I don’t do a lot of work-related travel, not like some people I know. Still, several times a year, I find myself on the road. Having a nice hotel room is good. Restaurants are a plus. Wi-Fi is a necessity.

My Android For Dummies books describe how to transfer files between a computer and your mobile device. I don’t get into specifics on Windows 8, mostly because only about a dozen people use Windows 8. Just this past week, one of those 12 wrote me to ask how the Android-Windows 8 file transfer works. Here’s my answer!

Decades ago, Apple Computer made computers you wanted. I lusted after my Macintosh SE 30.I couldn’t wait to get my next Mac Pro upgrade. It’s all sexy hardware, and that’s what Apple does well, but the software also counts for something.
